Feature Interview: A Morning with Ricky Whiteman, Maylim’s New Head of Pre-Construction – Midlands & North

There’s a certain energy in the Chesterfield office this morning, the kind that comes when someone new arrives with a story worth telling. We’ve spent the day catching up with Ricky Whiteman, Maylim’s newly appointed Head of Pre-Construction – Midlands & North, whose role will strengthen our presence across the wider UK and deepen our expertise in early‑stage project strategy.

Ricky has the grounded confidence of someone who has grown through the industry from the soil up, quite literally. His journey is rooted in horticulture, shaped by hands‑on experience, and refined through senior leadership across the landscaping and external‑works sector. Today, we sat down with him for a conversation that felt less like an introduction and more like a glimpse into the mindset of someone who genuinely loves what he does.

Where it all began

Firstly Ricky, welcome to Maylim. Please tell us a bit about where you’ve come from through the ranks in our industry.

“My passion for horticulture and landscaping started when I was young, my Grandad was a keen gardener, and I spent my school holidays helping him. I realised that this was something that I wanted to pursue a career in, so after studying at Askham Bryan College, I started my own landscaping business. After a few years, I wanted to take my practical knowledge and apply it to a more commercial environment, and I secured a role as trainee estimator at Grace Landscapes. Over time I progressed through the business to Head of Estimating North, before joining Maylim as Head of Pre-Construction, North & Midlands.”

There’s a quiet pride in the way Ricky talks about his beginnings, not as a corporate origin story, but as a craft learned through family, curiosity and graft. It’s the kind of foundation that shapes leaders who never lose sight of the work on the ground.

Projects that shaped him

What projects have you been in where you’ve felt particularly proud?

“I have been involved in some really exciting projects, but the ones that really stick out for me are where the project has totally regenerated the area. I think my proudest achievements are receiving BALI Principal Awards for Boys Garden at the National Memorial Arboretum, Teeside Shopping Park and Monk Bridge Development, Leeds. Other notable projects to mention being Fairfax Manchester, Phase 1 of York Central, Queens Gardens, Hull and Stockton Waterfront.”

Ricky’s portfolio reads like a map of transformative public‑realm work. His pride isn’t in the accolades alone, but in the impact these spaces have on the people who use them. Very Maylim.

A vision for pre‑construction excellence

What excites you about your new role at Maylim? What are you here to do — and what’s your vision for pre‑construction excellence?

“I am excited to be working for an organisation that shares my passion for landscaping. When I visited the Coal Drops Yard and Grosvenor Square projects and spoke to colleagues, there was a genuine buzz of excitement to deliver high quality which demonstrated to me a team that truly care. On a personal development level, I am excited to learn new aspects to external works, as my experience is predominately in hard and soft landscaping.

My vision is to create strong relationships with our suppliers, clients and supply chains, to ensure we go the extra mile delivering fantastic projects that make a difference to the local landscape.”

There’s something refreshing about Ricky’s approach, a blend of ambition, humility and a clear desire to build relationships that elevate the work. His focus on collaboration feels perfectly aligned with the Maylim Way.

Leadership, Yorkshire‑style

How would you describe your leadership style?

“I am an enthusiastic, straight talking Yorkshire man; openness and integrity, I believe, are critical for building successful relationships. If I see a problem, I like to think outside of the box and encourage my team to do the same, collaborating by listening and learning from one another to get the best result.”

It’s hard not to smile at this answer, it’s honest, warm and unmistakably Ricky. A leadership style built on clarity, integrity and creativity.

Life outside the office

“Outside of work, I love eating out and trying new restaurants. We are a rugby league mad family; my son and stepchildren all play amateur rugby, so weekends are pretty busy supporting them. I also enjoy walking and the gym and spending time with the family.”

A life full of food, family, sport and fresh air, the kind of balance that keeps perspective sharp and energy high.

Senior Leadership Team Update

Maylim is pleased to share a series of senior leadership appointments that mark an important next step in the company’s continued development.

Founder and Managing Director Thomas O’Mahony will transition into the role of Chief Executive Officer, with Liam Hawkins appointed as Managing Director. This evolution supports Maylim’s ongoing growth while ensuring the business maintains the quality, culture and client‑focused approach that have shaped its success across the UK and Ireland.

As CEO, Tom will focus on the strategic direction of the company. Strengthening key relationships, exploring new opportunities and guiding the long‑term vision of the business.

Liam will lead Maylim’s day‑to‑day operations as Managing Director, working closely with the senior team to drive performance, support people development and continue building on the company’s strong industry reputation.

The leadership team is further strengthened with the appointment of Ben Bellinger as Operations Director, overseeing operational delivery and supporting project teams across Maylim’s growing portfolio.

Gareth Kinsella has also been promoted to Contracts Manager, recognising his contribution to the business and enhancing Maylim’s operational leadership structure.

Senior Leadership Appointments

Thomas O’Mahony — Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Tom moves into the role of CEO as Maylim enters its next stage of growth. Having built Maylim into one of the industry’s leading external works and public realm contractors, he will focus on strategic direction, key relationships, new opportunities and long‑term business development.

Liam Hawkins — Managing Director

Joining Maylim in 2014 as a Site Manager, Liam has progressed through Project Manager, Contracts Manager and Operations Director roles. His appointment as Managing Director provides continuity in leadership and supports Maylim’s continued growth, ensuring the company’s standards, culture and reputation continue into the next chapter.

Ben Bellinger — Operations Director

Ben joined Maylim in 2014 and has delivered some of the company’s most complex and high‑profile projects. As Operations Director, he will lead operational delivery, support project teams and maintain consistency across Maylim’s expanding portfolio.

Gareth Kinsella — Contracts Manager

Since joining Maylim in 2018, Gareth has become a key part of the operational team. His promotion to Contracts Manager reflects his technical expertise, attention to detail and commitment to delivery excellence.

Celebrating Our Apprentices.

National Apprenticeship Week is a chance to recognise the dedication, talent and fresh perspectives apprentices bring to our industry. At Maylim, we’re proud to support the next generation of skilled professionals and this year, we’re shining a spotlight on two apprentices who have already made a meaningful impact: Lewis Ware and Zac Reed .

Meet Zac Reed. Building the Future Close to Home.

For Zac, working on the Crystal Palace Park project having growing up nearby, feels personal. The park was a place he played in as a child, and now he’s part of the team transforming it for future generations. That sense of connection fuels his enthusiasm and pride in the work he does every day.

Zac has been learning the fundamentals of groundwork and drainage , gaining hands‑on experience that’s essential to the early stages of landscape construction. One of the things he enjoys most about his apprenticeship is the opportunity to earn while he learns , building real skills on site while being supported by experienced colleagues.

“Zac has demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm since he joined us. He has made good friends amongst the site team and is learning all the time. It has been great to work with Zac and we look forward to supporting him further in establishing his career.” Ben Corkhill, Project Manager.

His dedication and positive attitude have already been recognised. Zac was recently awarded our Reward & Recognition Award for January , a testament to the impact he’s making so early in his career.

Spotlight on Lewis Ware. Seeing Projects Come to Life.

Also based at Crystal Palace Park, Lewis Ware has quickly become a valued member of the team. One of the things Lewis enjoys most about his apprenticeship is seeing his work come together into finished spaces , watching a project evolve from groundwork to a completed landscape has been a huge motivator.

“Lewis has applied himself well and has been a valued member of the team here. He is assured and considered in his approach, always watching and learning. It has been a pleasure having him on the project and we look forward to supporting him as he develops his career.” Ben Corkhill, Project Manager.

Throughout his apprenticeship, Lewis has developed a strong understanding of the communication and professionalism required on site. From coordinating with colleagues to working alongside contractors and clients, he’s gaining the confidence and skills that will serve him throughout his career.

Lewis brings enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to get involved in every task, qualities that make apprenticeships so important to our industry.
